Light Foundation

Hope For Kajiado has supported Light Foundation since 2016.

Light Foundation submits a grant request each year for a specific project support which is reviewed by Hope For Kajiado board of directors.

A small grant was awarded to provide school uniforms for refugee children from the Congo, living in Nairobi.
Light Foundation was formed in 2014 as a non-governmental agency to assist the poorest children in Kenya with material needs. It has expanded its focus and now works on a range of services including:

• Provide school-age girls with sanitary pads so they stay in school

• Provide boys with uniforms and writing materials

• Provide mentorship programs to girls to help reduce school drop outs and raise average pregnancy age

• Provide scholarships to boys and girls

• Provide for a primary school in Nairobi to meet the needs of local and refugee children

Pupils in Vihiga County Kenya get uniforms from Laura Nyangasi of Light Foundation.
Laura says most girls feel disadvantaged when they lack basic school items like uniforms forcing them to quit school at an early age.

A Message from Laura Nyangasi, Founder

My name is Laura Nyangasi. I was born and raised in a village called Gurugwa in Vihiga County. I hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Human Resources option from the Kenya College of Accountancy University, and a degree in International Relations from United States International University.

From a tender age, I yearned to ensure everyone was treated right, even if it meant sacrificing my own comfort. Although I enjoyed a good early life, despite being brought up by a single mother, some things happening around me were disheartening. Many heartbreaking cases of girls dropping out of school or who were raped or forced into early marriages gave me the zeal to want to empower the girl-child.

At 22 years old, in 2013, I founded a charity organization that would purely support the needy in society, Light Foundation Kenya. Today, the Foundation helps young girls and boys with school uniforms, sanitary pads for girls, and empowers those who are not in school. Some girls still have difficulty accessing sanitary pads and drop out of school when their periods begin. Astounding levels of poverty in many parts of the country have resulted in these girls living in deplorable conditions. There is a need to help them achieve what they need. Light Foundation has been able to provide over 50,000 girls across the country with free sanitary pads, school uniforms and mentorship programs.

In 2015, former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru awarded me “Inspirational Woman of the Year” for being an inspiring woman from Vihiga County. The award came as a surprise, and made me appreciate the efforts of others around me to save the girl-child.

In January 2018, I founded a school in Nairobi to help young children, including refugees from the Congo, to learn in a Christian-based environment. Currently we have forty children attending the school, ten of which attend on a scholarship basis because their parents cannot afford the tuition our main objective is to enroll so many kids on scholarship basis so no kid misses out on essential commodity like education. Please help us by designating your donation through Hope For Kajiado for the Light Foundation. Thank you.
